Thoughts on writing (and finding the time)

By Emily on June 7, 2012

For me, there’s something really cathartic about putting pen to paper, noticing how one’s handwriting changes mid-paragraph, watching the ink flow neatly from the rollerball. I am very specific about pens, less so about paper. My bags and purses are filled with schnipsels of paper, scenes imagined on the backs of receipts, quotes shoved into […]

Publish or…perish in a sea of procrastination

By Emily on July 15, 2011

I just lost a post I was working on a bit yesterday. Sometimes a little data loss can make you feel like life is out of whack, like something is gone and will never quite be replaced. And it wasn’t even super deep or fascinating, just thoughts that had come to mind over the course […]

Why I Write

By Emily on May 5, 2011

{This piece has been sitting in some part of my brain for a long time. I’ve seen it in a few places – it was a poster on the back of a friend’s bedroom door, and in some notebook at my parents’ house, I’ve written it all out in turquoise fountain pen. Over the years, […]

Nothing about silence

By Emily on March 31, 2011

“1970 knows nothing about isolation and nothing about silence. In our quietest and loneliest hour the automatic ice-maker in the refrigerator will cluck and drop an ice cube, the automatic dishwasher will sigh through its changes, a plane will drone over, the nearest freeway will vibrate the air. Red and white lights will pass in […]

Part of the joy of writing

By Emily on March 10, 2011

When whatever it is that makes us writers fires at the right time and at the right place, and the perfect word/phrase/sentence in exactly the right place happens? It can happen anywhere—you could be somebody who’s doing four running stories in an afternoon at a […]

Happy happy anniversary…to me!

By Emily on May 16, 2010

Kind of hard to believe, but today marks the 3 year anniversary of this blog. What started as a way to keep in touch with friends while I was in Spain and traveling around Europe has morphed into something…else. From Spain, the blog’s theme was so easy – it was about writing about my experiences. […]

About Me

photo of miamired I like writing, photography, reading, music, design, typography, paper products, days in the seventies and sparkly snow, Spanish wine and cans of PBR. I spent a year in Córdoba, Spain, working as a language and culture assistant through the Spanish government, traveling, and writing about it here. After a few years back in my home state of Montana, I moved to Austin, Texas, where I like to go exploring, take pictures of my food, write letters, dream of far-off places, and think about concepts of home.
