Lighting up the dark

Lighting up the dark

By Emily on December 11, 2011

Whenever I come home from seeing my friend Anna, which isn’t all that often as she’s typically living in Sweden or Spain, I come back and have found new ways to I emulate her. She’s fashion-forward and Swedish, so I get a lot of my Scandi-fix from her. We can communicate in IKEA-ese, no problem, […]

An unthemed update (time to catch up)

An unthemed update (time to catch up)

By Emily on December 4, 2011

I’m sitting in my living room, listening to “Linus and Lucy” for one of the first times this season, a little transfixed by the Christmas tree, finally decorated. It’s my first tree (and I even wielded the saw!) and is mostly covered with my parents’ castoff ornaments and a bunch of FIMO fruit ornaments […]

Gobbler's Knob: such a gross name

Gobbler’s Knob: such a gross name

By Emily on February 2, 2011

But it is from ‘ol Gobbler’s Knob that our friend Punxsutawney Phil decided spring is on the way. Tell that to people in the Midwest. Or Northeast. Or anywhere in the South. Or here, where it was -5 or -10 this morning, depending on who you talked to (through chattering teeth). But Phil seems to […]

On hold

By Emily on December 18, 2010

I’ve been doing a fair amount of crafting of my own, as well as shopping at local craft fairs, shows, and so on. I’d love to take some photos to share, but there are two slight problems: – I’m like a vampire and rarely see the light. Photography needs to happen on weekends. – Even […]

Our Black Friday

By Emily on November 26, 2010

I know Black Friday is something that everyone loves to malign….but my mom, sister, and I have the most relaxed, wonderful morning. No, really – we do. After scanning through the ads in the newspaper on Thanksgiving night for any specific deals, we wake early (a true feat for my sister) and plan our route […]

First snow

First snow

By Emily on November 19, 2010

I often love the photos and quotes or poems in the opening pages of Real Simple, but this month’s I found truly captivating. Although right now, the snow isn’t helping my cold, and it isn’t helping my pride when I slip on icy crosswalks and almost nosedive in public places, and it isn’t helping my […]

bye bye winter

By Emily on March 12, 2010

(coming next: hello spring!) I had been holding out for a few more photos for my “doesn’t snowshoeing take you wonderful places?” post – but then the snow just stopped. Out of nowhere. And never really came back. I think Lolo Pass (a nearby recreational area great for snowshoeing) ended up at about 50% of […]

About Me

photo of miamired I like writing, photography, reading, music, design, typography, paper products, days in the seventies and sparkly snow, Spanish wine and cans of PBR. I spent a year in Córdoba, Spain, working as a language and culture assistant through the Spanish government, traveling, and writing about it here. After a few years back in my home state of Montana, I moved to Austin, Texas, where I like to go exploring, take pictures of my food, write letters, dream of far-off places, and think about concepts of home.
